About

Jess Rippengale grew up in Cornwall and graduated from the University of Plymouth with a first-class BA (hons) in Fine Art. Her artwork explores the British coastline, using natural materials such as the tendrils of ‘mermaid’s purses’ (the egg cases of the small-spotted catshark) in her weaving, and whittling crochet hooks out of driftwood, which she uses to create seascapes of the beaches they came from. She also writes the Substack newsletter ‘Safe in the shallows.’
